October is Manufacturing Appreciation Month. Over the past 30 years, the industry has evolved and the digital transformation has made new careers and new opportunities. To help shine a spotlight on some of the new roles, we will be spotlighting different employees all month long. This week, we are featuring our Robotics Engineer Lasindu Datunarachchi. We asked Lasindu a few questions to help people better understand a little more about his day-to-day work.
Q: How would you describe your role at Sure Controls?
A: I manage projects predominantly involving Robotics and Machine vision. In these projects, I would also be the designated Electrical Engineer, therefore would be involved in system design, schematics, programming, all the way to commissioning of completed systems.
Q: What is your favorite part of your day?
A: Projects can vastly differ from each other, so every project is a new adventure. I am constantly excited to see what comes next through the door, and to see what problem we need to solve to bring a smile to our customer.
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
A: The biggest challenge I face, and I’m sure this is even more relatable today with the ongoing pandemic, is managing things that are out of our control such as late parts, scarce materials, etc.
Q: Would you recommend your type of work to others?
A: Absolutely. The line of work is fast paced with technology ever evolving. We are constantly introduced to the latest technology and that keeps the work engaging and exciting.
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
A: I am married to a Russian! So, at family reunions, I get to eat some fantastic shish kebabs (usually along with some great whiskey).
A special thanks to Lasindu Datunarachchi for taking time out of his day to answer our questions and helping us get to know him and his role a little bit better. It’s our hope that by highlighting the challenging and creative work available in the manufacturing industry, we can help change the general perception of our field.
