Manufacturing Appreciation Month : Setting the Record Straight on the Top 3 Myths

Manufacturing Appreciation Month

October is National Manufacturing Appreciation Month so it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the growth of the field as well as re-evaluate some of the common misconceptions. The manufacturing industry has quickly evolved over the last three decades. While previously described as “dumb, dirty and dangerous” those misconceptions have been shattered. It’s hard to overstate the importance of automation and technological advancements. To better understand how the industry (and it’s image) have changed, let’s look at the top 3 myths about manufacturing.

Myth #1 – Automation is taking away Manufacturing jobs.

Reality – While automated equipment and robots have certainly made a significant impact on the industry, there are still currently over 500,000 manufacturing jobs still open in the U.S. today. The good news? Automation can actually improve employee satisfaction and retention. Robots and automated equipment can complete the repetitive tasks that humans find unappealing. This will free up employees to focus on work that is more complex, requires problem-solving skills and is ultimately more satisfying.

Myth #2 – Most manufacturing jobs are underpaid.

RealityThe National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) reports the hourly compensation for the  average U.S. manufacturing worker is 17 percent higher than any other industry–taking home $77,506 per year. It’s unfortunate that some people don’t understand the opportunity the manufacturing industry provides. A recent study from Deloitte shows that only 50 percent of Americans believe manufacturing careers are secure and rewarding. However, surveys of actual manufacturing employees show much higher satisfaction rates.

Myth #3 – Manufacturing jobs are dangerous.

Reality – Safety is a top priority for manufacturing companies. And, the focus on automating in the past several years has only made safety planning more comprehensive. Machine vision systems, measuring instruments, barcode readers, PLCs and other factory automation sensor products have helped create safe and state-of-the art work environments for employees.
